Kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla)
Kittiwakes nest in dense colonies in sea cliffs all around Iceland. The nest which is made of grass and mosses, glued together with droppings, is placed on small ledges in steep cliffs. Kittiwakes spend more time at sea than other gulls and are rarely seen inland. They feed on small fish and discards from fishing boats. Kittiwakes are noisy in the colonies and the name is taken from its sound.
There are several Kittiwake colonies by Skjálfandi bay. The largest one is in Saltvík south of Húsavík. Kittiwakes are therefore commonly seen in the bay.
