At the same time the Sailing ship Opal is being refurbished with a new Regenerative Plug-in Hybrid Propulsion system. This unique system will allow the ship to run solely on renewable energy.

By using the unique Regenerative Plug-in Hybrid Propulsion system in whale watching a new dimension is added to the way our guests experience nature. By eliminating the noise from the engine, one will hear these majestic animals louder and clearer. The unique slow-going electric driven propeller is extremely quiet in the water.
The traditional oak sailing ship Opal will be able to produce elecricity with the propeller while using sails.
North Sailing plans to offer the first whale watching tours on the hybrid sailing ship Opal this summer from Húsavík. In July, Opal will then sail to Scoresby Sund fjord in Greenland where it will undertake adventure expeditions.
