Entertaining whales
The wonderful weather causes good mood – not only all our passengers were in perfect mood today, but also the whales.
In the morning we observed a humpback whale, when suddenly a minke whale surfaced close to the bigger animal. These whales are usually quite shy and sometimes difficult to approach. Not so that one! It was very curious, came very close to our boat and checked us out!
But the afternoon was even better. In the northern part of Skjálfandi Bay we spotted at least three humpback whales and two of them were very entertaining! They slapped with their extremely long flippers and suddenly they started lobtailing, meaning slapping with the mighty tail! Maybe they tried to impress each other – who knows?
The evening tour finally was kind of magic. The sea looked like a mirror made of silver. On the way north we first encountered some harbor porpoises and later on a group of white beaked dolphins, which approached us and we observed them bowriding! We also met two of the humpback whales again we already saw earlier this day. Both of them were very calm and surfeced right next to our boat! And we were already on the way back when we spotted a minke whale – so four species in one tour!
For us it was very exciting and just a perfect day!!!
