The Big 4 of Skjálfandi Bay….
Today I had two trips on our biggest boat “Garðar” and both of them have been really successful:
On the first tour (at 9:00) it took us a little while to find some animals, but after sailing for about one hour we came across a group of white-beaked dolphins. We took some good looks at them and decided to keep on searching for more, and just a few minutes later we found another group of dolphins. This second group of white-beaked dolphins was very friendly and relaxed and came up really close to our boat, even swimming under the boat!
We continued sailing a bit further west, towards the mountains, as we suddenly got a call from our boat “Náttfari”. They told us about a whale they had seen not far away from us and just a few moments later, we saw a minke whale surfacing!
We got some nice looks at the minke and as the minke whale went down for the dive, we spotted the blow from a humpback whale in the same area! What a nice surprise!!!
Also the humpback surfaced several times close to us before we had to start setting the course back to Húsavík. But on the way back we spotted a very nice group of harbour porpoises, the smallest whale species here in the area!
So on one tour we got to see four different species, which for sure does not happen every day!
Also the afternoon was successful, when we found two very nice humpback whales and the harbour porpoises again.
