Another successful day on Skjálfandi Bay
For the first tour of the day it took us less then 15 minutes to spot the first whale, which turned out to be a Humpback Whale! That one was really close to Húsavík harbour and we got some great looks at it. A few times it came up right next to the boat, so close that we could see the long white flippers the humpbacks are known for.
After observing the Humpback Whale we kept on our journey west. We got very close to the beautiful Creek Mountains. It is always enjoyable to be able to sail up close to the mountains, especially when we have White Beaked Dolphins to look at, as we did today.
On our second tour we started off heading north. A bit far out we spotted the largest animal on earth, the Blue Whale, which came up right next to the boat. Later on we spotted some White Beaked Dolphins that were in a good mood. Thery were swimming a long with the boat and coming up right next to us. On this tour we also saw a few glimpses of the smallest whales we have, the Harbor Porpoises.
There was also great birdlife on Skjálfandi today. A lot of puffins were spotted as well as some Northern Gannets, the largest seabirds in the North Atlantic.
