Always an adventure!!!

The people who visit Iceland are usually adventurous travellers, seeking adventure. Well today, North Sailing’s guests were in for a treat. As we like to remind our guests, whale-watching is nothing like visiting a zoo. Not only are the whales not trained to pop up anytime we want to, but the Skalfandi Bay is no Marine Land. Today, Njörður (the viking god of the seas and wind) was in a bad mood. The North-East wind was blowing strongly and as soon as we sailed outside of Tjörnes Peninsula’s shelter, we experienced bumpy waves.

Despite all this, our excellent captains managed to make the best of the day! White Beaked Dolphin pods were observed, joyfully breaching in the waves. And as we finally reached the far north of the bay, we found a blue whale.

Readers of this blog may have already read that we have already had such a sighting this year. It cannot be stressed enough that an appearance such as this is never uninteresting! There are only 10 to 15 thousand of these animals left on earth and only close to 5 thousand in the North Hemisphere. In other words, we are extremly lucky to see such a gigantic animal. The blue whale weighs about 190 tons: if we were to estimate an average person to be 65 to 70 kilos, the blue would weigh an equivalent of a city with a population of 2200, just like Húsavík!

Therefore, even if the weather and sea can get rough here in Iceland, be sure that there are always treasures to discover in Skjálfandi Bay. 30 meter long ones!
