A lunge-feeding day in Skjálfandi Bay
Apart from modest rain and poor visibility as the bay was overcast from morning to afternoon, it was a great day, with three species on the morning tour (Blue Whale, Humpback Whale, also White-beaked Dolphins briefly) all more or less in the same spot and the same took place on the afternoon tour, less the dolphins. It was clear that the bay was full of food today and the stars were a Humpback duo that fed continuously throughout our presence without it seemed the slightest concern over the boats around. Lunge-feedings were many and agressive and we got a surface impression of their tactic known as bubblenet feeding whereby the animals entrap and encircle fish within an imaginary wall made of bubbles that they blow out and then approach from below until the time is just right to attack with the mouth wide open. What a joy to watch!
