A blue whale and a handful of humpbacks…..
The bay is still full of humpback whales these days and today was no exception:
We left the harbour at 10:00 onboard our biggest vessel “Garðar” and after about 20 minutes of sailing, we already spotted the first humpback whale. The humpback surfaced a few times just next to our boat and lifted its majestic fluke before going for a dive and we continued sailing further out, as we already saw a huge spout further away….it was the blow from a BLUE WHALE!
This blue whale was a very large individual and it was really impressive to see the long greyish back surfacing several times not far from our boat.
After a little while we left the blue whale and sailed further south again where we encountered at least three more humpback whales.
In the afternoon, we did not see the blue whale again, but we still encountered several humpback whales…..fingers crossed that the large baleen whales will stay in the area a little longer ;-).
