Here comes the sun!
What a wonderful day on Skjálfandi Bay. After days and days of fog and rain we have had a blue sky and sunshine all day. The temperature was nice and warm– so warm that we didn’t even have to use our overalls.
But enough of the weather.. we also had great whale spottings today!
On our morning tour we spotted four species! We saw a group of White Beaked Dolphins and were lucky enough to have them bow ride. We also spotted three Humpback whales on this tour. Two of them were really big ones and super chilled. Several times we had them surfacing right next to us, showing us their elegant way of diving, by lifting up their flukes. Later on we also spotted the smallest whales we have, the Harbor Porpoise and a beautiful Minke Whale.
On our afternoon tour it took a little bit longer to spot the whales. We scanned the entire bay and it looked as if the whales had all left the bay. We did eventually spot two Minke Whales but they were very hard to see. The tour was coming to an end and we had to turn the boat back into the direction of Húsavík when all of the sudden three big Minke Whales surfaced and a Humpback whale started breaching, all four of them infornt of us! We had an amazing encounter with these animals that reminded us yet again that Skjálfandi Bay is not a zoo. It is the wild and unpredictable nature where we, the humans, are the guests. 🙂
