3 species of baleen whales in the bay!
The sea was still a bit wavy today, but despite the bumpy conditions we had very nice and successful whale watching tours during the day.
I went on three tours onboard our biggest vessel “Garðar” today and on the first tour (at 10:00) we managed to spot three different species of baleen whales (those whales don’t have any teeth but use their baleen plates to filter small food out of the water): We got to see a humpback whale right next to our boat, saw at least two minke whales and – as a BIG surprise – a BLUE WHALE, the biggest animal on earth!
We have blue whales regularly here in the early summer (from late May to middle of July), but it was a big surprise to see a blue whale here so late in the season!
The blue whale seemed to have left after the morning tour, but on the second trip (at 13:30) we once again got some really nice looks at a humpback whale.
The humpbacks also played the main role on our evening tour (at 18:00) as we spotted two different humpback whales (in the same area) and had a beautiful sunset on the way back to Húsavík.
