Electric motor challenge at the shipyard
As part of the installment of a new unique Regenerative Plug-in Hybrid Propulsion system in the sailing ship Opal, North Sailing ship builders at the Húsavík shipyard faced a tough challenge.

How to get the 1.5 ton electric motor down into the engine room of the 64 years old oak ship without doing damage?

Suffice to say, the ship builders at Húsavík slipyard have specialized in the preservation and rebuilding of traditional oak ships and did not shy from the challenge.

With an enginous system of electric and manual hoists, they managed to receive the motor from a crane into the control cabin – and from there is was lowered sideways down two stories into the engine room in less than an hour.

The brand new electric motor now sits on the motor block, ready to connect to the rest of the unique electric system that will drive the sailing ship into a future of sustainable and nature friendly operations.
