The Big Five of Skjálfandi Bay
We have been incredibly lucky with the weather and the whales during the last couple of weeks and today was no exception!
On our morning tour on “Garðar” we managed to spot 5 different species of cetaceans, something that does not happen very often during the season.
It started with a humpback whale just outside Húsavík harbour before we continued sailing a bit further, when we all of a sudden saw two very large blows towards the north. As we came closer, we got some nice looks at two blue whales, the biggest animal on earth!
We then sailed a bit further towards the western part of the bay where we got some fantastic looks at at least four, maybe even five different humpback whales and in the same area we also spotted a minke whale.
While leaving the mountains and heading back towards Húsavík, some small harbour porpoises came up close to the boat and we had just enjoyed some hot chocolate when a group of white-beaked dolphins decided to show up on the way back towards the harbour. What a trip!
Fingers crossed for tomorrow ;-).
