Whales and sails
Today, Haukur headed out into Skjálfandi Bay with the hope of finding some of the whales that frequent its nutrient rich waters. Our captain Tryggvi, soon spotted an unmistakable blow, and we were with our first whale! A friendly Humpback whale that was content to stay near the boat, delighting our passengers with its presence. We could see the entire animal stretched out under the surface, with its characteristic white flippers glowing out from below, its black back, humped dorsal fin, bumpy face, two blowholes and fluke. It couldn’t get much better than this!
With our passengers more than satisfied with the morning’s whale watching, we continued travelling on through the Bay in hopes of finding some more marine mammals. Steady winds from the South allowed us to put up some sails, turn off the motor and simply enjoy the sounds of our surroundings. This smooth sailing was the perfect setting for some delcious hot chocolate and cinnamon rolls, spiced up with some Stroh rum. Slowly, we made our way back to the Harbour, and passengers and crew left the boat feeling relaxed and happy with the morning’s watching.
