“Ski to the sea” in the remote Glacier fjords
A sailing tour with a group of skiers was relocated to the Westfjords due to lack of snow in the Skjálfandi bay area. Hildur was therefore sailed to the Glacierfjords in the Westfjords where a jolly group of 10 people joined the crew of 4 onboard for 3 nights.
First two days were spent in Hrafnfjörður in good and sunny weather and the group enjoyed good skiing in various slopes by the fjord. On the second night Hildur was sailed over to the next fjord, Lónafjörður, where our good friends from Borea Adventures onboard the yacht Aurora were moored with a group of 9 skiers on board. The two boats were then tied together and the evening spent in good company. When the wind increased and Aurora started to drag her anchor the captains decided to split the two boats up and Hildur moored nearby.
Next day arrived rainy and windy but Aurora headed to Hrafnfjörður for more skiing but our wonderful group of skiers took the decision rather to spend the day at leisure in the cozy saloon of Hildur, playing cards, listening to music, telling loads of jokes and stories and enjoying appropriate refreshments. Later, some of them decided that a swim in the sea was a good idea and plunged into the 3,8 °C cold water but were even faster out of the water than jumping in. A group of brave “mussel men” were then sent on the dinghy with boatsman Rémy to pick mussels for appetizer. After long and rather cold hunting trip they returned with loads of mussels that cook Martin prepared deliciously. It was then enjoyed with few sips of white wine.
The last night wind grew even stronger than before and more anchor chain had to be let out in order to keep Hildur in place. But her gentle movements soon rocked everyone to sleep for the last night… for now.
Last day was also no skiing day but Hildur slowly headed to Bolungarvík where the group had their cars waiting. The crew of Hildur wants to thank the nice group and also Jökull Bergmann from Bergmenn who organized the trip with North Sailing for a good time on board and we really hope we’ll get the opportunity to welcome them onboard again one day.
