A dream come true
In 1999 Nils Bjartur Hailer moved from Stuttgart, Germany, to Iceland. Nils joined the crew of North Sailing in 2004 and his interest for wooden sailingboats grew when he came in encounter with schooner Haukur.
When Nils was a young boy he heard and read a lot about the adventures of the german explorer Arved Fuchs (www.arved-fuchs.de). Nils was fascinated over Arved’s expeditions in different parts of the world, including both the arctic and antarctic.
One day when Nils was out sailing on schooner Haukur in our Whales, puffins and sails tour, he saw a unfamiliar sailingboat coming into the bay of Skjálfandi and heading for Húsavík harbour. When back to the harbour Nils visited the sailingboat which turned out to be Dagmar Aaen, Arved Fuch’s expedition boat!
After some years of “friendship” with Dagmar Aaen, Nils was now summer 2011, invited to join the crew of Dagmar Aaen for the sailing from Húsavík, Iceland, back to Germany. The sailing might take up to two weeks since they will be making a few stops on the way, in the Faroe Islands, Shetland Islands and perhaps a quick stop in Norway and Denmark.
Nils is of course very excited and happy to get the opportunity to be apart of this, and for the young boy Nils, this is a dream come true!
