More Than 50 Pilot Whales in Húsavík: Video Captured By Our Captain
Pilot whales are rare visitors in Húsavík. However, when they arrive, they usually arrive in large numbers. That was the case earlier this week when we had a school of over 50 Pilot whales roaming in the bay!
It’s always delighting spotting whales in Húsavík! Pilot whales are a particularly great species for that matter, as they travel in large schools of tens of individuals. Therefore, it’s usually a spectacle once the Pilot whales enter the bay. It’s easy to say that was the exactly the case when more than 50 individuals were circling our boats.

Fun Facts About Spotting Pilot Whales in Húsavík (And Iceland in General)
Being more than twice the size of the White beaked dolphin and the Harbour porpoise, the Pilot whale is considered fairly large. However, when compared to other giants found in Skjálfandi bay, namely the Humpback whale and Blue whale, its not considered large at all. For a dolphin though, the Pilot whale is quite big!
What’s really enjoyable about spotting Pilot whales is how active and playful they are. In addition to the huge number of whales you spot at once, they seldom go for a long dive. They usually don’t stay submerged for longer than 5-10 minutes at a time. Therefore, it’s always a lot of action when they’re around.
We still don’t know how come Pilot whales visit Húsavík so infrequently, but we really enjoy their company! Hopefully they’ll be here for weeks to come!
