“Truly a unique experience!”
Recently Schooner Haukur undertook a three day voyage around the islands and fjords of North Island. Among other places, the herring era town of Siglufjörður and the Island of Grímsey on the arctic circle were visited.
This trip will be on schedule in the spring time and upon request also late August and September but the experience seemed to be well received by the 5 passengers.
A couple from Holland, a couple from the USA and an icelandic journalist signed up for this first trip and the crew consisted of 3 experienced North Sailing people: Árni Sigurbjarnarson, Einar Ófeigur Magnússon and Nils B. Hailer.
The best way to describe this successful trip would probably be to retrieve comments from the ships logbook where passengers wrote their comments.
“Truly unique experience, very small and personal. Enjoyable and different.”
“Very nice, not one moment of feeling bored. Very social crew and I had a lot of fun.”
“Great! We had a life-time experience on this unique trip. I think the program was thought through really well, because there was so much diversity that we have not had a dull moment.”
“Staff was the best – I learned so much about Iceland from them. They were very friendly and helpful. I especially liked discussing international politics with the captain.”
“The staff was the best part of the trip. All were very friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and made me feel like a friend and not a stranger.”
“The service on board was good. We got plenty of food, lots of drinks. Especially the café lattés were very tasty. All my questions were answered and explained more than thoroughly.”
“The crew was fantastic. They helped, explained and took really good care of us. Always providing us with plenty of food and drinks…stories and jokes.”

Seven of eight voyagers on sea. From left: Einar, Árni, Ronald, Jeanette, Nils, Tony and Cindee.
On the first day, the first stop was at Flatey Island but it is a nice experience to walk around this island that was deserted in 1968.
Árni on the lookout.
In Siglufjörður the amazing Herring era museum was visited and the curator of the museum, Örlygur Kristfinnson, guided them around. Everyone had the chance to taste herring and Icelandic schnapps, brennivin upon arrival.
Nils was responsible for the cooking and didn´t fail.
First mate Einar and captain Árni celebrated when back in harbour after a good day of sailing.
