Garðarshólmur

Today I went and spoke to Sigurður Eyberg, the project manager of Garðarshólmur, about the project and asked him some questions about his role as a project manager and the old factory were the building is being set up.

Garðarshólmur is meant to become a centre for research and discussion about a sustainable future; sustainable use of nature and resources. Garðarshólmur will mainly have two roles: teaching; revolving mostly around exhibitions for tourists and others in Garðarshólmur’s building in Húsavík and the second role to provide a facility for research in the area which is one of a kind in the world. To make plans for a sustainable future; research of the past, mistakes made and successes. Research how man shapes nature and how nature in turn shape man.

Sigurður’s role as project manager is mostly servicing the board, working on the projects given by them and has been since he started working for Garðarshólmur in April.

Garðarshólmur has aquired an old factory building by the harbour of Húsavík for use in this project. When asked about the suitability of this house and whether it isn’t in a state of disrepair he says that he has been asked if it wouldn’t simply be cheaper to tear the house down and build a new one; but keeping with the spirit of the project of sustainability the decision to try and use the materials and the building at hand to as great an extent as possible without having to import any materials for building was made.

The project still has a long way to go but will be officially launched the next Monday with exhibits and lectures to coincide with the Sail Húsavík.
