Blue whales in the bay!!!
We just got word from captain Heimir on our sailing schooner “Hildur”, that they (together with North Sailing’s other boat “Bjössi Sör” with captain Hrólfur) have been watching at least three (maybe even four) blue whales on the morning tour.
It is of course an amazing sight to see the largest animal on the planet and hopefully this is the start of the annual blue whale season. The last couple of years we had always seen these giants here in the bay from late May/early June until mid July.
We are awaiting more news from our crew (and maybe also some pictures) as the boats are back in the harbour.
Following are two blue whale pictures that were taken onboard “Haukur” yesterday on the way back from Grímsey to Húsavík on our “Edge to the Arctic” tour.
The enormous blow from the blue whale can be up to 12 metres high.
