Elín – the whale next to our ticket office is back!
If you find yourself in Húsavík these days, you have a great chance to spot one of our favourite whales in the Bay! Elín has been a regular visitor to Skjálfandi Bay since 2011.
Humpback whales, the most commonly sighted species in Skjálfandi Bay, have distinctive patterns on the undersides of their tails that are unique to each whale, just as fingerprints are to humans. These patterns allow for their identification.
In fact, if you look in front of our ticket office, you’ll notice the same distinctive pattern. Let’s do your own humpback matching after the tour!
This particular whale was also satellite-tagged in November 2014 in Eyjafjörður and stayed in Iceland until mid-January 2015. Afterwards, it left North of Iceland and swam straight to the Dominican Republic, where it spent just ten days before making the long journey back to Iceland.
