Incredible sights in the evening sun
Had good luck with a Humpback and a Blue Whale in the evening sun today. The Blue Whales hadn‘t been spotted all day but in the evening sun their spouts light up and are easy to spot from very far away. I went out a 5 o‘clock on Bjössi Sör with cpt. Hrólfur and pretty soon we got word from the crew of schooner Haukur that they were watching a Humpback in the north-western part of the bay.
We headed over there but as we were getting close to Haukur we spotted some Blue Whale spouts even further west so Haukur, which had by then gotten a very good look at the Humpback, headed over there while we got a show from the Humpback. As we were getting closer to it we saw huge splashes on the surface, the whale was breaching! When we got to it it wasn‘t breaching anymore but was thrashing around slapping it‘s fluke on the surface creating huge splashes. After doing that for a while it rolled onto it‘s side and back and started slapping the surface with it‘s big white flippers for a long time. The show wasn‘t over by then it rolled back onto it‘s stomach disappeared for a moment and then lazily breached, only lifting half of it‘s body above the surface but nevertheless it was an incredible sight. It then resumed it‘s flipperslapping but we desided it was time to show the passengers some Blue Whales and headed over to where Haukur was watching the Blue Whale we had spotted earlier.
The Blue Whale, while not exactly as playful as the Humpback, was still an incredible sight and the sound it makes when it comes up to breathe is not comparable to any other sound I have ever heard. After watching the Blue Whale for a while we headed back to the harbour with some very satisfied customers.
