Magical whale watching moments in Húsavík this summer
The whale watching capital of Iceland impressed us once again! There has been a lot of excitement in Húsavík this season, filled with beautiful wildlife encounters and the omnipresent happiness of being free to travel again.
Safe journey to another paradise
The whale watching season has come to an end in Húsavík this year. Our favourite Humpback whales have started their long journey back towards the warmer waters and their mating grounds. We are forever grateful for the time they spent with us here and wish them a safe journey towards the Equator.
We will start the 2023 whale watching season as usual in March, and we can’t wait to see our dear humpback whales with their familiar “faces” back in the waters of Skjálfandi Bay. In the meantime, we will enjoy the cosy snowy winter in Húsavík with the beautiful arctic lights.
Silent whale watching
Year after year, we take whale watching to the next level with the award-winning silent whale watching tours onboard Andvari and Opal, our eco-friendly sailing vessels specialising in intimate encounters.
North Sailing’s long-term goal is slow travel and minimizing disturbance to whales and wildlife. The passion and enthusiasm of every guest who joins us is inspiring, and we are very grateful for each of you that share this responsible journey with us!
If you want a unique wildlife experience when in Iceland, we recommend booking a tour on Andvari or Opal in advance due to the great demand for these sustainable tours.
“Simply unforgettable experience! It was our first time sailing and what an experience. The boat was carbon neutral and very quiet hence perfect for whale encounters. We saw 3 whales during our trip and it was very special. I would definitely do more sailing trips in the future. Thank you for the fantastic experience.“
Season of amazing encounters in Húsavík!
Húsavík is a unique location to spot marine mammals year after year and our 28th whale watching season was no different. We had a dreamy start and just in the first few weeks of the season, we were positively surprised to encounter 7 different species, including Blue whales and Killer whales.
Tip: Joining us in Spring or Autumn is a great opportunity to encounter a variety of whale species in Skjálfandi Bay, including Fin whales, Blue whales, Killer whales and Humpback whales.
Humpback whale’s feeding frenzy
The best was yet to come! The feeding conditions were incredibly good in the summer months resulting in big numbers of humpback whales, minke whales and white-beaked dolphins seen daily on the tours. For many days we witnessed a lunge feeding frenzy in Skjálfandi Bay! Some humpbacks were even spotted bubble net feeding, which stunned not only the passengers but the crew as well!
Overall the season has been consistent with regular sightings and humpback whales seen on most of the tours throughout the year.
Better experience onboard
This season, we tried our best to make your experience even better by reducing the capacity on all our boats down to approximately 80%! That means more space for each passenger to enjoy the sailing adventure in Skjálfandi Bay. As always, we offer a complimentary fairtrade hot chocolate and our family-recipe cinnamon buns to all passengers on the way back to the harbour.
Thank you for a fantastic whale watching season
We want to thank everyone for the superb season that is now behind us. We hope you enjoyed the tours as much as we did! Our whales, dolphins and porpoises are very fortunate to have so many kind visitors who respect them in every aspect.
Thank you everyone for coming and sharing magical moments with us and wonderful support!
We’re already looking forward to seeing you back on board in 2023!
