Success despite thick fog
A thick fog lay over the bay when we went out this morning, and I wasn’t especially optimistic for the first tour. We however quickly got reports of White Beaked Dolphins, and managed to stumble on a group of them as well, although they quickly got lost. We drove on, and as we got closer to Kinnarfjöll, the mountains on the western side of the bay, the fog lessened. We found two Minke Whales there, and after a good look, we started to head back. On the way back, we were stopped at every turn by groups of White Beaked Dolphins, and a third Minke Whale right outside the harbor!
When I went out for the second time, the fog wasn’t quite as thick as it had been earlier, and it became apparent why we had repeatedly run into groups of dolphins earlier, the bay was absolutely teeming with them! We followed many of them north, until we were close to Puffin Island. There we saw that the Puffins were flying around the island in great numbers, and appropriately enough many of the dolphins took to breaching as well, flying out of the water and landing with great splashes! We spotted a Minke whale in the area, but never got a close look at it, and with that, we headed back.
Later in the evening, a Humpback whale was seen as well, probably the same one as the day before!
Lovely sightings despite the fog.
