A very curious minke whale!
Today I went out on three trips: At 10:00, 13:30 and 17:00. The weather was beautiful and we were successful on all three tours, but the first tour at 10:00 was one of the best whale watching tours I have ever had!
It started with a mother dolphin with her calf, which we were able to watch for a while just a few minutes after we left the harbour. We then headed a bit further west and it didn’t take long until we were running into a small group of harbour porpoises. But the highlight of the trip were two minke whales, especially one of them which came extremely close to the boat and spent almost one hour with us: Spyhopping, swimming under the boat, rolling over and checking out the passengers all the time. It was an absolutely amazing sight and when we came back to the harbour, everyone still had a big smile on its face, including the crew (Einar, Teresa and me).
On the next trip we went out straight towards the area where we saw the minke whales earlier and indeed we found two minkes again on this tour, including the curious one. Again it came really close a few times and was even swimming under the boat several times, but it wasn’t as playful as in the morning. But again: Very friendly whales and beautiful weather.
The third tour I went out on Knörrinn together with captain Hrólfur. We didn’t find any minke whales this time, but instead we found a nice group of white-beaked dolphins and a huge number of harbour porpoises close to the mountains in the western part of the bay.
All in all it was a great day, and following are some pictures taken during the morning tour.
