The comeback of the Humpbacks – Photos!
It was sunny, but also quite cold this morning when we headed out into the bay at 10:00. We started sailing in a westerly direction, because there had been some minke whales and dolphins close to the Creek Mountains or Víknarfjöll, as they are called in Icelandic.
But after about one hour, we all of a sudden saw a big blow several times, not too far away from the boat. A few moments later we also saw a black back and a fluke, so it was clear: it was humpback whale, what
a nice surprise!
We haven’t seen a humpback whale here in Skjálfandi Bay for about three weeks now, so we were really happy that we could watch the whale for some time, and while we were waiting for the humpback whale to
come up again, we also spotted a minke whale a bit further away from the boat.
A bit later we also saw another humpback whale blowing in the distance. So we decided to leave the first whale and have a look at the other one. We could also watch that one for a while, before we had to start heading back into the direction of Húsavík. But while we were watching the second humpback whale, and also on the way back to Húsavík, we could see another big blow in a distance, so we were quite sure that there were three humpback whales in the bay.
We came back to the harbour with a lot of smiling passengers and after a little break I went out again with captain Hrólfur at 13:30. Again, it was sunny and cold, and to our delight we managed to watch one minke whale and two humpback whales again, in the same area where we had seen them on the morning tour. We could even see one of the humpbacks feeding really close to the boat several times.
So all in all, a perfect autumn whale watching day in Skjálfandi Bay.
Let´s hope there is enough food for them in the bay and the humpbacks will stay here for a while ;-).
