Humpbacks again!

We had not seen the humpback whales for a while now (the last sighting was on September, 26th), but during the last days we also had a period of bad weather and big swell, which prevented us of going out on two of these days.

However, this morning we went out in really good conditions and when we left the harbour, we were setting the course north-west, into an area where we had seen a minke whale yesterday.
After searching in the area for a while, we were indeed successful and found a minke whale there. We could see it surfacing quite close to the boat and it seemed to have been on its way west, towards the mountains. But while we were waiting for the minke whale to come up again, I saw a big fluke from a humpback whale in the distance.
So we left the area and went – of course – into the area where the humpback whale went down. We were waiting there for a few minutes (humpback whales usually don’t dive very long) and were rewarded: During the following 30 minutes we could watch the whale several times close to the boat, each time showing his almost completely black fluke before he went down for another dive.
It was definitely not one of the whales that had been here during the end of September and of course we are hoping that he will stay in the bay for a while.

We also got more great news from the schooner Hildur that went on a special tour to the abandoned farm house Naustavík today: They saw a total of three humpback whales and one minke whale.
So let’s hope that we will again have some fun with the humpback whales during the next days. We are still going out every day at 10:00 (until the 20th of October) and the weather forecast for the next couple of days looks quite promising….;-).
