Great whales in great weather
Today was really great. It was the first time in a few weeks that we had good weather and in fact it was so good I managed to go the entire first tour without putting on my hat, gloves or windbreaker. On the first trip we found an incredibly calm humpback whale not far from the harbour and watched it for a while. We even killed the engine and it came close to the boat, as if to check us out. We then headed further out were we found a blue whale and had a few looks at that as well before heading back to the harbour. The second tour was one of the best tours I have had in the three years I’ve worked as a whale watching guide. We started heading out to where we had been watching the blue whale earlier since there had been more blows in the area. On the way there we ran into a humpback whale  that I think was the same humpback we checked out on the first tour but since it didn’t really raise it fluke I wasn’t certain. It was deep diving when I noticed some bubbles rising to the surface very close to the boat and soon the whale surfaced close to there. We decided to keep heading out as the other whales where quite far away. When we got there there were blows all around. We ended up choosing to follow a blow that turned out to be a fin whale (although some of the researchers from the whale museum and the research center think this whale may be a cross-breed between a fin whale and blue whale). We saw this whale really close and decided to head towards another blow that we were quite certain was a blue whale but as we were sailing towards that we ran into another humpback whale that went down for a deep dive very close to the boat raising its fluke high out of the water, as if to make sure our passengers got a picture of a humpbacks distinctive fluke. When we caught up with the blow we spotted earlier it did turn out to be a blue whale that was a little hard to catch up to but once we finally caught up to it some white-beaked  dolphins turned up out of nowhere and started swimming around with the blue whale. All in all it was an amazing trip and I hope to have others like it in the future.
