Adventure at the edge of the arctic

The first North Sailing expedition this season was a successful “Ski to the Sea” trip in April but last week the first “Edge of the arctic” trip was done last week. It was a wonderful group from Bangalore, India that joined captain Heimir and his crew on schooner Hildur for a two day adventure at the edge of the arctic.

Visiting Grímsey and crossing the arctic circle under sails, onboard one of Iceland’s only schooner could be the highlight of the tour but there is more to it. The Islands of Flatey and Lundey, the puffin island, are also visited. People catch their own fish for dinner, which in this case was spiced up by great indian spices brought along by our guests.

The whales and birds are in sharp focus on this and this time, both humpback whales and a minke whale were watched, plus puffins and abundance of other seabirds such as guillemots, razorbills, gannets and cormorants.

Sometimes it is hard to put such an experience in to words but then pictures step in and do the job. Following pictures were taken by our crew during this first “Edge” trip of the season. The crew of Hildur will always remember this joyful group of people from Bangalore.
