Fantastic early spring whale watching in Húsavík!
Spring is a nice time to come whale watching with a great variety of whale species visiting Skjálfandi Bay! Húsavík has long been known for its excellent whale watching conditions, as some of the largest animals on earth travel to these ideal feeding grounds in early spring every year.
Seven whale species spotted already in March
Winter whale watching is a great opportunity to encounter a variety of whale species in Skjálfandi Bay. This March has been a perfect example of this. As we like to say, each tour is unique, especially in the winter months. While Humpback whales or White-beaked dolphins were seen on all our tours in the first two weeks of the season, the second half of March was full of surprises. It all started with two Fin whales roaming in Skjálfandi Bay – the powerful blows of these amazing cetaceans left everyone stunned! A few days later, even the first Blue whale of the season paid us a visit! Did you know that Skjálfandi Bay is one of the few places in the world where people can regularly observe the Earth’s largest mammal?
However, not only the largest mammal was observed in Skjálfandi Bay, but also the smallest of the baleen whales in Iceland – the Minke whale was spotted feeding close to the Kinnarfjöll mountains. Throughout March, we were lucky to encounter very shy Harbour porpoises on a few occasions! And last but not least, we had fantastic looks at a pod of Killer whales on beautiful sunny days at the end of the month! What a dreamy start to the 2022 season!
Puffins are on their way back to Húsavík!
Let us tell you a little secret! Puffins are on their way back to Húsavík, and we start sailing around one of the world’s largest puffin colonies on a whale watching tour on the 16th of April! Aside from the numerous whales that make their way to Skjálfandi Bay, we enjoy the company of rich and diverse birdlife as well. Exploring majestic whales and lively puffins on one tour is a truly unforgettable experience. Lundey Island is bustling with life each spring and watching these funny eye-catching birds flying around, and diving for food is incredibly fun. An estimated 100,000 puffins stay in this colony every year! Have you ever seen Atlantic puffins in the wild?
How good is whale watching in April?
April is a superb month to be in Húsavík! It’s the time when nature and wildlife are coming to life after the winter, days are getting longer and warmer every day, and the whale watching season is already in full swing! We love April, as do whales too! It’s no coincidence that whale watching in Skjálfandi Bay is a popular experience in springtime. A wide diversity of whales travel here and stay in these ideal conditions for feeding. Based on our rich experiences, more whales are coming to the Bay in April, yet there might be as many surprising encounters as in March!
