Humpback and minke whale watching on Haukur
This morning we left the harbour at 11:00 onboard the sailing schooner Haukur. I had already been guiding on Haukur several times last year, but it was the first time for me this season, so I was looking forward to the tour. I went out with captain Heimir and we set the course north-west into an area, where other boats had already seen some whales earlier in the morning. We were sailing for about 45 minutes when we suddenly spotted the blow from a humpback whale. It was the same whale that was seen breaching many times yesterday and we spent about half an hour with this whale, getting some really nice close-up encounters much to the delight of both passengers and crew. Later we decided to sail a bit further south-west, closer to the mountains and it didn’t take us long until we found a really big minke whale.
Also the minke whale came up several times right next to our boat and when we came back to the harbour, everybody was satisfied with the tour: The passengers had seen two species of whales really close-up and for me it was also nice to guide a tour on Haukur again and to sail together with captain Heimir (the last time we sailed together was also about 1 year ago).
Nice whales, nice boat, nice tour ;-).
