Countless Humpback Whales!
If you have dreamt of seeing a humpback whale in action, Húsavík is a great destination for you. The elegant activity of the humpback whale when it raises its fluke as it goes down for a deep-dive has been a common sight for North Sailing passengers and crew for the past few weeks and the humpbacks been beyond count in Skjálfandi Bay.
The weather in Húsavík was simply fantastic yesterday morning so I decided to leave the North Sailing office and join one of the whale watching tours on their task to explore the wonders of Icelandic nature and look at the amazing marine mammals it has to offer.
We had barely left the harbor when the first sightings were spotted; three humpback whales relaxing in the sunlight together. One of North Sailing’s schooners, Haukur, was already in the area looking at the humpback trio so passengers were able to get some outstanding photographs. Three humpback whales surfacing right next to a traditional Icelandic schooner, with the stunning Víknafjöll (Creek Mountains) in the background. A combination of Icelandic culture and nature at its best!
When we had taken a good look at the three humpbacks we decided to head further into the bay, and in a short while the next humpback whale was spotted.
After it had surfaced a couple of times very close to the boat to check out the passengers and crew we decided to head closer to the Creek Mountains, and we were in for a treat! We came across countless humpbacks and even some minke whales as well. It didn’t really matter where we looked; there were whales all around us. Absolutely fantastic!
This spring, North Sailing was lucky to add Stephan Kolditz, the guide on this tour, to their guiding team. Stephan is a whale enthusiast, has worked as a whale watching guide both in Norway and South Africa and his knowledge about the material has no boundaries. It is safe to say that Stephan is a valuable addition to the North Sailing team and we wish him the best of luck in the tours to come.
