Dolphins, minke whales and harbour porpoises
This morning at 10:00 I went out with captain Hrólfur onboard “Bjössi Sör” and when leaving the harbour, we set the course north-west towards the area where we found a minke whale yesterday. We were scanning the area quite well, but instead of finding the minke whale again, we ran into two nice groups of white-beaked dolphins and especially the second group was really nice. We spent some time with the dolphins and on the way back to Húsavík, we suddenly saw a minke whale, not far away from the harbour. So we also watched the minke whale several times surfacing not too far away from our boat.
On the next tour, at 13:30, we went out directly towards the area where we found the minke whale earlier and it didn’t take us long to find him (or her?) again. We had already watched the minke whale surfacing several times, when it suddenly became really foggy. Unfortunately we lost track of the minke whale in the fog and decided to sail a bit further north, towards Lundey, the puffin island. On the way we saw some nice harbour porpoises, the smallest whales in the North Atlantic, and after a while, we found a second minke whale, just south-west of Lundey.
All in all a nice day with three different species seen on our tours.
