The first tour after the storm
The last three days, the weather gods had not been on our side here in Húsavík so we couldn’t go out at sea. This morning at 10:00 was our first tour after the storm and it is always exciting to go out again to see what has changed in Skjálfandi Bay. We are of course always hoping that strong wind from the north brings some food (and whales) into the bay so it is always exciting to go out and explore the bay after a storm as you never know what to expect.
We went out with two boats, “Náttfari” and “Bjössi Sör”, as there had been quite many people waiting to go whale watching during the bad weather period. I went with captain Mási on Bjössi Sör and we started sailing north-west, into the direction of Flatey, the flat island. It didn’t take us long to find some harbour porpoises and a few minutes later, we got news from captain Hrólfur on Náttfari, that they had found a minke whale. So we sailed over there and watched the minke whale a few times, before we continued sailing further out. Close to the mountains, we were suddenly surrounded by white-beaked dolphins. There were a lot of dolphins around (I would say at least 50) and during the next 30 minutes, we could see all kinds of dolphin behaviour, including bow-riding and jumping completely out of the water. On the way back to Húsavík we got a short look at another minke whale.
Even though the sea was still a bit rough (it always takes a while for the ocean to calm down), it was a really nice tour with three different species seen.
