The whale festival continues!
From the logbook:
“When leaving the harbour this morning, we were of course hoping that the majestic blue whales would still be around. So we set the course directly towards the area where we had seen them yesterday afternoon. The first whale we encountered was a humpback whale. We spent a nice time with him and got some close-up views before we continued sailing further west. A few minutes later, we saw first one, then two more minke whales. We were watching the minkes a short while and while we were waiting for them to surface again, we saw a huge blow not too far away. No question: A blue whale!!!

As we got closer, we realized that this blue whale was a really big individual, probably around 25 metres in length. We got a really nice close look and a few minutes later, we saw a second blue whale. A really nice surprise at this time of the year, so late in the season!
On the way back we also saw some harbour porpoises, which was also really nice to see the biggest whale and one of the smallest whales in the world at the same tour.
In the afternoon, things got even better: We saw all four species again (harbour porpoises, humpback whale, minke whale, blue whale). The only difference was that we saw only one blue whale but two humpback whales. One of the humpbacks was breaching 67 (!) times right next to the boat. A beautiful whale watching day here in Skjálfandi Bay! Let’s hope it continues like that tomorrow ;-).
