A Family at the Edge of the Arctic
A family of four that joined our Edge of the Arctic tour on the
25th of June has been kind enough to share their thoughts on
the tour as well as their exellent photos and videos made on the tour.
Thank you, Paquette Family!
We are always striving to expose our children to unique places and experiences. This summer, as we snaked through the northern fjords of Iceland, we stumbled upon the small town of Husavik. This quaint town is home to North Sailing, a well-established business offering whale watching and unique sailing expeditions. Although North Sailing offered us the opportunity to design our own sailing excursion (ski and sail, hike and sail, etc.), we opted for their routine Edge of the Arctic excursion – a fabulous choice.
Life on board the sailing vessel Haukur was an incredible experience in itself; donning thermal flotation suits to stifle the Arctic air, helping to set the sails, taking turns at the helm, reeling in the day’s catch, eating delightful meals artfully prepared by Martin and, of course, soaking in the natural beauty that enveloped us.
Indeed, the scenery and wildlife throughout our North Sailing adventure were far more spectacular than we ever imagined. The captain constantly maneuvered the ship to provide us with the best possible position to view mammals and birds. He spent hours stealthily following their movements by drifting or using minimal engine noise – all with great skill. As a result, we notched up am impressive list of sightings; no less than 9 whales (both Gray and Minke), pods of dolphins, and huge bird cliffs. To top it off, our land-based explorations on Grimsey and Flatey Islands yielded lots of puffins, auks, arctic terns, and guillemots.
It is hard to pick out any one particular highlight, as every moment spent with Haukur and her crew were brilliant. It is a journey that will forever be etched into our memories and daily conversations. Thank you, North Sailing. We are looking forward to mapping out our own itinerary with your ships and crew upon our return to Husavik!
