Feeding frenzy after the storm
Bad weather prevented us from going out during the last three days, so we didn’t really know what to expect when we left the harbour this morning. Strong wind from the north can often change the food situation in the bay and the storm seems to have brought a lot of food into the bay!
In both tours we could watch whales feeding among hundreds of seabirds, really spectacular!
On the morning tour we spotted a minke whale just a few minutes from the harbour, but unfortunately this whale was a bit difficult, so we decided to head further out, hoping to find the humpback whales that had been around the two weeks. And in an area close to the mountains we were rewarded with a total of five humpback whales! We stayed with them for a while before we set the course back towards Húsavík. Very close to Húsavík we ran into a feast! Three minke whales feeding among lots of birds, including several gannets diving like rockets into the sea, what a sight!!! And definitely a nice way to end the tour.
In the afternoon we found one minke whale again close to Húsavík and as we sailed further, we spotted a total of seven humpback whales and three or four minke whales in the western part of the bay, it was often hard to decide where to look, there whales blowing almost everywhere.
A fantastic day out at sea and hopefully the food (and the whales) will stay for some days.
