A bit cold today? The whales did not think so.
What a phantastic day we had out there in Skjálfandi Bay today. We went out with „Bjössi Sör“ and a very international passenger crowd. Our guests today came from all over Europe, the US and even as far as Australia. Although the beautiful sunny weather we had for the last couple of days was replaced by a little colder, though dry weather today everybody enjoyed the trip very much.
Dressed up warmly in our cosy North Sailing overalls we headed out and it did not take long to spot our first whale today. It was a Humpback Whale feeding in the bay. We watched it surface a couple of times before it waved bye-bye to us with its majestic tail and deep-dived. But all passengers got a chance to see him a couple of times and take some nice pictures.
On we went towards the south, where we spotted a couple of White-Beaked Dolphins very close to Bjössi Sör. They were curious enough to stay around the boat for a while, which was quite unusal considering that there was a mother with two new-born babies among them. What a beautiful sight! Those babies were probably just a couple of days old.
The birds lead us the way when Captain Hreiðar took us further out, and there was one of those rather shy Minke Whales that surfaced three times for us. On our way back to the harbor of Húsavík we spotted a Harbour Porpoise, which is one of the smallest of the whale species.
Our guests from the Netherlands confirmed that they had not expected to see so many whales on one trip, since this was their first time doing whale-watching. Our guests from France were happy that our guide Hildur could name all the species we saw in english, german AND french. So, happy and smiling faces all around us.
