The ideal whale watching

When Garðar went out for the trip at half past one o´clock the weather was really beautiful; it was summer warmth in the air and the seaward wind was minimal. The conditions for whale watching don’t get much better than this in Skjálfandi bay! We set our course to the mountains (Creek mountains) in the west of the bay were whales had been found on the morning trip and before long we found us a humpback whale which was calm, surfaced with even interval and stayed up for quite some time at each surfacing. It’s fluck was totally white underneath and it had a lot of scars on the back. This one decided to do some lop tailing on our right hand side barely some five meters away so the passengers standing on deck got couple of drops over them. I was asked after this if it knew it was putting on a show because it looked like it was trained to do this. The answer is of course that this is the wild nature and you never know what it is going to bring you!

But the trip was not over we found another humpback with fluck that was almost all black, we just saw it once because in a distance we spotted some white splashes from jumping dolphins. My guess it that there were 50-100 hundred white-beaked dolphins in this group, bit hard to tell how many but they were at least all around us. Many of them were jumping and coming close to the boat, checking us out. After this it was time to head home after a great trip.
