A Blue Whale in the snow
We left the harbour this morning with high hopes, trying to find the blue whale again that we spotted yesterday afternoon. As we crossed the bay in westerly direction, sailing towards the mountains, it was snowing quite a lot and we also enjoyed some superb bird watching in these winterly conditions! We saw several Northern Gannets (the largest seabird in the North Atlntic) and also the puffins are already quite numerous and can be seen in many places in the bay.
After searching for a while we spotted a very powerful blow followed by a huge back breaking the surface: The Blue Whale!!! During the next 45 minutes we got some really nice close-up views at the blue whale, which was swimming calmly right next to our boat – a really impressive experience!
On the afternoon trip we didn’t find the blue whale again, but instead we found a humpback whale feeding close to the mountains in the western part of the bay. The whale was obviously feeding, taking only short and shallow dives.
All in all, a very successful whale watching day with the two large baleen whale species (blue and humpback whale) and a lot of birds in winterly weather conditions.
