A Walrus in Skjálfandi Bay
Passengers and crew of our whale watching boat the “Bjössi Sör” were amazed when they encountered a full size Walrus on today’s 13:30 whale watching tour.
The Walrus was spotted in the sea close to Husavik harbor and seemed at ease with the boat and spectators.
Walruses are rare guests at the shores of Iceland, but they are usually found much further north in the arctic.
Pessengers were able to take a good look at the Walrus as it came close to the boat and reared its head in curiosity exposing the distinct moustache and gleaming white tusks.
Guide Christian and captain Hrólfur, which is one of the most experienced whale watching captains in Iceland, had never seen a walrus in the wild before, so this tour was very special for both the passengers and crew.
It is safe to say that the walrus watching was a pleasant surprise, but whale watching tours have been very successful this year and plenty of whales have been staying in the bay.
