Feeding Frenzy!
This morning we were joined by a group of school kids from the local school here in Húsavík and they definitely chose the right day to go out with us: It has been a wonderful whale watching day here in Skjálfandi Bay!
The sea was really calm and during the morning tour we encountered four different species: we saw four different humpback whales, at least three minke whales, a big group of white-beaked dolphins and some harbour porpoises…..all these animals were feeding among big groups of seabirds close to the mountains on the western side of the bay. It was really amazing to see and sometimes we didn’t really know where to look, there were whales all around us!
The afternoon tour was also really nice: Just a few minutes after we had left the harbour we came across a humpback whale (one of the two individuals from yesterday), in the middle of the bay we took a short look at a minke whale and as we arrived in the area close to the mountains, there were still a lot of birds, four humpback whales and three or four minke whales around.
Fingers crossed that the feeding frenzy will continue tomorrow!
