Festival of flukes
Warm summer weather seems to be over…at least for a while, A heavy sea mist has rolled into the bay, hiding the mountain tops from our view. Of course, the whales don’t care about the weather, and we were optimistic after so many succesful days in a row. We first crossed a few porpoises just outside the harbour, and sailed westward, toward the invisible mountains, to find their large relatives. In accordance to our expectations, we finally spot three of them, which were very busy finding their lunch, regularly surfacing with a full mouth. They dove so many times that we had a real fluke festival. A minke whale also joined the company.
The afternoon tour wasn’t less terrific. We could observe a humpback whale breaching a few times from far away. As we arrived, the whales were still eager to show us their beautiful flukes. Despite the cold arctic winds, everybody enjoyed this almost-everlasting show. It was so entertaining that nobody really wished to go back to Husavik immediately. Hot chocolate and cinnamon pastries were welcome with such a weather.
