Calm sea – but active whales!
When we sailed out to search for the whales today, the sea was completely calm again. This means ideal conditions for spotting the animals!
In the morning we set the course in direction of the Víknafjöll mountains, where we saw the whales the last couple of days. But before we reached the very west of Skjálfandi Bay, we suddenly saw a breaching humpback whale further south! We turned the boat and headed there. Although the humpback whale did not jump out of the water again, we got some really nice looks on it. After that we got into a big meeting close to the mountains. Several minke whales were busy feeding. We saw even more humpback whales and suddenly we were surrounded by a group of white beaked dolphins!
And the afternoon was just as successful as the morning. Although the temperatures seemed to have missed the official start of the summer yesterday, nobody cared about that: We were busy with watching two minke whales, surfacing very close to our boat. Furthermore we got some really close encounters with a humpback whale that was feeding right next to the boat. It came up with its mouth wide open, so we could even see the baleen plates these whales have instead of teeth, with which they filter the food from the water.
What a wonderful insight into the biology of the animals!
