Acrobats of the sea

The fury of the northwestern winds was clearly over this morning, and we navigated on a quiet sea.

The Skjálfandi Bay once again proved to be one the best spots in the world for observing humpback whales. Here, there, everywhere, a large number of humpback whales manifested their presence by spouting their characteristic heart-shaped blow. We got to see a few of them at close range, graciously rising the fluke before disappearing under the water surface.

A lonely minke whale showed up a couple of times, but quickly vanished. As a matter of fact, we smelled it more often than we saw it. There’s a good reason this whale is nicknamed “stinky minke”. 😉

As we were starting to sail back to the harbour, we met a pod of white-beaked dolphins in a feeding frenzy. They immediately noticed the boat and swam toward us, bow-riding like crazy. They all gathered together and started to perform for us their favorite acrobatic show, for which they are famous: jumps, leaps and 360-degree loops. A pleasant way to conclude another whale-watching trip full of success.
