Fin whales in the bay!
Today was an absolutely fantastic whale watching day here in Skjálfandi Bay!
We had beautiful weather conditions when we left the harbour onboard “Náttfari” at 10:00 this morning: The sea was really flat, and the sun was shining for most of the tour. And we were also lucky with the whales: We were watching a really nice humpback whale in the south-western part of the bay and at one moment, the whale even breached completely out of the water!
On the same tour we also saw some harbour porpoises, one of the smallest whale species in the world.
The next tour at 13:30 also had a nice surprise for us: We had already seen a humpback whale and a nice group of white-beaked dolphins further out in the bay and decided to search a bit further south, where we had spotted another humpback whale from the distance. All of a sudden, we saw two other whales in the same area and as we got closer, we realised that these whales were two fin whales, the second largest whales in the world! What a nice surprise! Fin whales are a rare sight here in the bay, as they are usually found further offshore. At one point, we also got really close to the two majestic fin whales and we could clearly see the white lower jaw of one of the animals, which is very typical for fin whales.
On our tour at 17:00 we saw the fin whales again and we got even closer to them, they surfaced just a few metres from the boat! We also saw humpback whales, harbour porpoises and on the way back we also came across a very playful group of white-beaked dolphins.
All in all, an amazing day out in Skjálfandi Bay with beautiful weather and five different species of whales (fin whales, humpback whales, minke whales, white-beaked dolphins and harbour porpoises).
