polar conditions

The weather forecast announced a snow storm for tomorrow. On the mountains, the grazing sheep are being brought down to the valleys. And today at sea, we could already feel the beginnings of the storm. Polar breeze blowing from Greenland made feel the bay somewhat chilly.

Except for the fulmars, the so-called “storm-birds”, no sign of life was first to be seen as far as the eyes could see.

But we were lucky enough to sight a young humpback whale, the one which fluke has almost a totally white underside. It made a serie of frequent shallow submersions, before preparing itself for a deeper dive. At one moment it surfaced very close to the boat, all parts of its body were to be seen underwater.

Before we started to head back to the harbour, as the see was starting to get rough, the whale lobtailed three times in a row. A nice way to conclude a cold but enjoyable day.
