Minke whale day in Skjálfandi Bay
It has been raining quite a lot today in Húsavík, but the whales didn’t seem to care: In total we have seen at least three different minke whales today.
In the morning we encountered one very nice minke whale (quite a big individual) just about 20-30 minutes from Húsavík harbour. We spent a lot of time with this very cooperative minke and the whale surface very close to the boat several times.
In the afternoon our first whale was a very small minke whale (probably the same individual we had seen yesterday afternoon), but it was rather elusive and hard to follow. So we decided to look for other whales and after a while, we encountered the minke whale from our morning tour again, which was quite easy to identify thanks to a notch on its dorsal fin.
We got some amazing looks at this minke whale and on some occasions, the whale surfaced just two or three metres away from our boat! We could clearly see the white band on the flippers and it was also very nice to see the head of the minke whale so clearly.
On our way back to Húsavík we even encountered one more minke whale (once again a rather big individual).
