A humpback close to Húsavík!
We had to cancel our tours yesterday (the wind was too strong to go whale watching), so we were excited to go out again this morning.
Every day is different, so we did not really know what to expect, but when we left the harbour it took us only about 15 minutes until we spotted a powerful blow in the distance.
As we got closer, we soon realized that this was the blow from a Humpback Whale!
We spent a lot of time with this nice humpback whale, which was actually an individual that has already been seen here in Skjálfandi Bay in July 2012 and also in Eyjafjörður in July 2012 and July 2013…..really nice to see an “old friend” coming back to its feeding grounds here in Skjálfandi Bay!
While we were watching the humpback whale, we were also surrounded by hundreds of seabirds, showing us that there was probably a lot of food close to the surface.
We saw the humpback whale again during the afternoon tour and of course we hope that it will stay around for a while.
