The puffins are back in big numbers!
I went out this morning together with captain Heimir onboard our vessel “Bjössi Sör” and the first thing we saw on our tour were two harbour seals that popped up all of a sudden. We stopped for a few moments to see if they would show up again, but unfortunately they were quite shy, so we continued sailing, searching for whales.
We went over the area where we found the minke whale yesterday, but it seemed to have left, so we sailed further out. Later we took a little detour to Lundey, the puffin island, and it was really nice to see that the puffins are already back in large numbers! Some of them were already sitting in front of their tunnels on the island, but the sea around the island was just black in some places, as there were thousands of puffins sitting at the surface.
We got some very good looks at the puffins and continued our search for the whales.
As we were almost back in Húsavík, we suddenly saw a whale diving, not far away from out boat.
It was probably a humpback whale (we only saw it briefly, not good enough to confirm the species), but even though we were waiting for almost 20 minutes, it did not show up again…..
Only a few passengers and our captain Heimir got a glimpse at that whale and as there were no other whales to be seen, we offered our passengers to join us on another tour again for free, whenever they are back in Húsavík.
