Loads of puffins and a friendly minke whale

The conditions for whale watching have been very good in Skjálfandi Bay today: The sea was quite flat and the visibility almost perfect, you could easily see several miles away.

We started our morning tour with taking a good look at Lundey, the puffin island, where we saw thousands of puffins getting ready for the nesting season.

Afterwards we headed out into the bay, but even though we were scanning a really big area, we unfortunately did not encounter any whales or dolphins.

In the afternoon, we decided to try yet another area, so we set the course in the directions of the mountains. In the middle of the bay we took a look at our schooner “Opal”, which is always a magnificent sight, especially under full sails with the snowy mountains in the background.

We sailed even further towards the mountains and that paid off!!! After a little while, a minke whale came up not too far away from us! It was a very nice and friendly minke whale and during the next 45 minutes, the minke whale came up right next to our boat several times!

Sometimes whale watching is also a matter of patience and in this case we were rewarded with some nice close-up looks at a minke whale.
